在80年代末所涌现的一大批重金属乐队中，Mr. Big算是比较有特色的一支的。他们玩的既非暴风骤雨的Thrash Metal，也非旋律悦耳的Pop Metal，他们在传统的重金属中加入了较重的布鲁斯乐的成份，但又非是哀怨的；同时，他们也是重金属乐队中为数不多的能唱民谣的乐队，因此，与其他的重金属乐队相比，他们的音乐显得心平气和、干干净净，富于技巧变化，曲子的音乐性很强且富有整体感。
Mr. Big来自芝加哥，乐队的创始人是Billy Sheehan，曾经在David Lee Roth乐队当过贝斯手，在经历了一系列风雨后，与Eric Martin（vocals）, Paul Gilbert（guitar）, 和 Pat Torpey（drums）一起组建了Mr. Big。吉它是他们最大的优势----因为有了Paul Gilbert，Paul Gilbert的吉他水平在80年代出现的一大批吉他手中是属于出类拔萃的。在1989年推出了首张同名专辑，水准和反响只可说是一般。
1991年，乐队推出第二专辑《Lean Into It》。1992年的时候，专辑中的一首民谣风格的单曲“To Be With You”登上了Billboard单曲榜的榜首，《Lean Into It》因此水涨船高，卖出了白金的销量，Mr. Big开始为更多的听众所接受。凭心而论，《Lean Into It》比上张同名专辑水准高了不少。
1993年，乐队推出第三专辑《Bump Ahead》，《Bump Ahead》是Mr. Big所有作品中最出色的一张，特别值得一提的是Eric Martin的演唱，他那优雅而又温婉的风格是其他重金属歌手身上找不到的。另外，Paul Gilbert凌厉的吉他技法也为专辑增色不少。
1996年，乐队推出第四张专辑《Hey Man》，但此时的乐坛重金属已是江河日下，尽管乐队在专辑中减少了重金属的份量，并适度增加了慢歌的比重，歌曲也做的更流行了，可无奈时不予我，1996年到底不是5年前，《Hey Man》在评论和销售上都没有取得好的成绩，不过在日本，Mr. Big还是挺受欢迎的。同年，Mr. Big宣布解散，Atlantic公司为乐队推出了一张名为《Big Better Best/The Best Of Mr. Big》的精选专辑；1998年，又推出一张乐队在Hard Rock餐厅的现场演出专辑。乐队核心人物Paul Gilbert（guitar）离开之后，也推出过几张不错的个人专辑。
但另我们欣慰的是Mr. Big解散不久后，乐队剩下的三位成员找来曾在Poison乐队1993年专辑《Native Tongue》中担任吉他手一职的Richie Kotzen，共同重组了Mr. Big，Richie Kotzen对于Blues音乐的领悟能力好过Paul Gilbert，双方合作的结晶就是1999年专辑《Get Over It》。
