US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrives in the Middle East today for talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
She will fly from Turkey to Israel where she will meet Prime Minister Ariel Sharon later in the day.
Ms Rice will have talks with recently-elected Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank on Monday.
The two leaders then hold a summit on Tuesday hosted by Egypt and attended by Jordan's king Abdullah.
Ms Rice has said her agenda will include ways of coordinating security measures and defusing crises when they "inevitably" occur.
She has indicated the US will not interfere in the peace talks although it is ready to step in if they falter.
"The United States wants very much for this to be a process that is the parties' process, that is owned by the parties, by the regional states," she said.
"When our involvement needs to take on a different character then we will do precisely that," she added.
Her visit to Israel is part of an eight-day tour of Europe and the Middle East.
